GI Bill Benefit Recipients

If you are a veteran and/or recipient of the GI Bill benefits, you may be eligible to study abroad on summer and semester programs with funding from the GI bill/yellow ribbon program. Contact the Veterans Resource Center at CBU or Jay Villasenor, Director of Veterans Resource Center, to determine whether or not you are eligible to receive funding for study abroad.

Steps and Considerations for GI-Bill Recipients

  • Research various CBU study abroad signature programs and determine which program is the best fit. Click here for a list of CBU study abroad signature programs.
  • If you are having trouble deciding on an option, reach out to the Director of Academic Engagement.
  • Once you have decided on a CBU study abroad signature program, meet with the Director of Academic Engagement or a staff member in study abroad to obtain a cost breakdown of your selected study abroad program. Once you have obtained a cost breakdown, you can submit the cost to the Veterans Resource Center at CBU. The VA asks for a breakdown of study abroad program costs.
  • The VA typically covers student service fees and tuition, but not usually housing abroad.
  • If you are eligible to study abroad under the GI bill, please note that the GI bill/yellow ribbon does not cover the application fee and deposit for study abroad programs. It will also not cover:
    • Participation fees and any study abroad-specific fees
    • Pre-departure expenses
    • Airfare & local transportation
    • Accident and medical insurance
    • Any costs not fully covered by monthly housing allowance or by books and supplies stipend
    • Meals
  • Begin CBU study abroad application process. Go to Get Started: Study Abroad Process for more information.
  • Continue to check in with the Director of Academic Engagement and the CBU Veterans Resource Center to ensure that the necessary information is being shared between offices.
